The Stavros Hadjiloizou Neurophysiology Laboratory

A dedicated paediatric neurophysiology lab

Named in memory of our co-founder, Dr Stavros Hadjiloizou, CPNI’s Director of Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology.

Our comprehensive neurophysiology laboratory is at the heart of CPNI. Children have their recordings in a calm, child-friendly setting, and every study is reported by specialists in paediatric neurology, so results feed straight into your child's care. We see children of all ages and abilities, from fragile premature babies to young adults.

Routine EEGA painless recording of the brain's electrical activity through small sensors on the scalp, used to investigate seizures, episodes and other neurological symptoms.
Ambulatory EEGA longer recording that your child wears at home, from a few hours up to 48 hours depending on what we need to capture, including overnight sleep when required. It records brain activity during everyday life and sleep, when episodes are most likely to happen.
Sleep EEGA recording during natural sleep, which can show changes not seen when awake. Some sleep deprivation the night before helps your child fall asleep during the test.
Brain and spine MRI and CTBrain and spine MRI, and CT where needed, can be arranged for your child, with the results explained to you in clinic.

When an EEG may be recommended

  • A first seizure, or known epilepsy that needs review
  • Unexplained episodes such as staring spells, unusual movements or sudden falls
  • Changes in development, behaviour or learning that may have a neurological cause
  • Loss of speech and language skills (regression), for example when Landau-Kleffner syndrome is suspected
  • Encephalopathy: unexplained drowsiness, confusion or a change in consciousness
  • Paroxysmal events, such as sudden episodes in the day or night, to tell whether they are epileptic or not
  • Unusual behaviours, or tics and other movements, when it is unclear whether they could be seizures
  • Monitoring epilepsy treatment, and before deciding to stop anti-seizure medicine

What to expect

1 Before: wash your child's hair the night before, without oils or gel. Bring a favourite toy or tablet. We recommend some sleep deprivation, especially for children over 2 years of age: about 3 hours less sleep than usual, going to bed later and waking up earlier. Bring milk for babies and young children.
2 During: sensors are placed gently on the scalp. It does not hurt, and parents of babies and young children usually stay with them and hold them. A routine or sleep-deprived EEG usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.
3 After: the recording is reported by our specialists and the results are explained to you at your follow-up.
Leaflet: Preparing for an EEGA guide for parents, to read before the test.
