Dr Paola Nicolaides
MBCHB, MRCP, FRCPH CCST (UK)
Is the co-founder (together with her colleague Dr. Hadjiloizou) of the Cyprus Paediatric Neurology Institute (CPNI) and one of its co-directors. Until her return to Cyprus in September 2007 she held the post of Consultant Paediatric Neurologist / Epileptologist, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Great Ormond Street Children’s’ Hospital, and the Institute of Child Health, University College Hospital, (UCL), London, UK.

Dr Nicolaides graduated from the Victoria University of Manchester, UK in 1985. She trained in Paediatrics in the UK and in 1991 obtained the MRCP. She became a full member (MRCPCH) and later on a fellow (FRCPCH) of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, UK. Between 1991-1997 she undertook her specialist training in Paediatric Neurology and in 1997 obtained the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST). During those years she held the posts of Clinical Medical Officer, Registrar and Senior Registrar in Paediatric Neurology at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, Manchester Children’s NHS Trust and at The Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust.

In 1998 she was appointed to a Consultant Paediatric Neurology post at the Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust and in Jan 2004 was appointed to the post of Consultant Paediatric Neurologist / Epileptologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH) in London. In September 2007 she returned to Cyprus with 16 years experience in Paediatric Neurology to take on the post of Senior Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the CPNI, Nicosia, Cyprus. She currently holds a contract with the Ministry of Health in Cyprus that enables her to provide care to patients entitled to the National Health System in Cyprus. In addition she holds a Visiting Scientist status at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) and an affiliation with the Makarios Hospital, Nicosia.

Dr Nicolaides’ name appears on the Specialist Register in the UK where she is recognized as a fully trained Specialist in Paediatric Neurology. She has a special interest and expertise in Epilepsy, neuromuscular and neurometabolic disease. She is a member of the GMC, BPNA, EPNS, the ILAE (Cyprus Chapter), the Pancyprian Medical Organization, the Cyprus Paediatric Society and a Board Member of the ADHD, Cyprus Support Group.

Dr Christos Christofi
Is a Paediatrician with Subspecialties in Developmental and Behavior Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. He attended the Medical School of the Ioannina University, Ioannina, Greece where he graduated in 1994 receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree. He trained as a Pre-registration house officer in Cyprus in 1995-6. He then fulfilled his Paediatrics residency in a variety of hospitals in Cyprus and Greece and completed his Paediatrics training at the 1st University clinic of the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, Athens, Greece in 2002 where he received the certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Pediatrics (CCST). He was also a full time Research Fellow for a period of 6 months in the Pediatric Respiratory clinic of Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, Nicosia, Cyprus. Following that he completed two clinical Fellowship Programs, one in Adolescent Medicine and one in Developmental and Behavior Pediatrics, in the Department of Paediatrics, at the Hospital for Sick Children and Bloorview Kids Rehab, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada until 2007. He recently returned to Cyprus and currently he holds his private practice in Limassol. Dr Christofi is a collaborator at the CPNI where he holds weekly clinics since the summer of 2008. His clinics at the institute cover a variety of services including the developmental evaluation of children, screening for age-related developmental level, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders, Learning disabilities, Developmental delays (Language-Motor-Cognitive delays), premature infant development, Anorexia-Bulimia Nervosa, substance abuse, school problems, Adolescent sexuality and behavior problems and he offers counseling sessions for children and teenagers.
Dr Marios Constantinou
Is a clinical child neuropsychologist. He attained this specialization in the USA, at the University at Albany, SUNY. There he studied Clinical Psychology and specialized in Clinical Neuropsychology (child and adolescent population) under Dr. Robert J. McCaffrey. His primary area of research is in forensic child neuropsychology. He is also interested in the neuropsychological functioning of children with epilepsy, neuropsychological functioning of children with learning disorders and ADHD, and child and adolescent aggression and victimization. Dr. Constantinou worked at several hospitals and rehabilitation centers in the USA, New York State. He completed his American- Psychological-Association-approved doctoral internship/residency at the Long Island Medical Center, neurology department-epilepsy unit, and at the Schneider’s Children Hospital in New York City, under Dr. Kenneth Perrine, Dr. Faith Gunning, and Dr. Kunsang Gyato.Since 2004, he has been an assistant professor at the University of Nicosia and a private practitioner as a clinical child psychologist and clinical neuropsychologist. He is a registered psychologist and a member of division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology), division 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology), and division 53 (Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology) of the American Psychological Association. He is also a member of the International Neuropsychological Society and an associate of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, among other professional European and American organizations. Dr Constantinou is one of the collaborators at CPNI and he holds weekly clinics at the institute.

Dr Kyriaki Evangelatou
MRCSEd
Is a Paediatric Ophthalmologist who has been working on a full-time basis at the Pantheon Eye Centre in Limassol since 2007. In addition she holds fortnightly clinics at CPNI.

Dr Evangelatou graduated from the medical school of the University of Crete, Greece in 1994. She subsequently trained in Ophthalmology in the UK and acquired specific training in Paediatric ophthalmology.

Dr Evangelatou has worked at the following centres:
  • University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire (Coventry, 2000-2002)
  • Ashford & St Peter's Hospital (Ashford, 2003-2004)
  • James Paget Hospital (Great Yarmouth, 2005-2006)

Dr Evangelatou obtained her fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology at Birmingham's Children’s Hospital in UK (Birmingham, 2006-2007).
Her special interests include neurophthalmology, premature infant visual screening, and screening of paediatric eye diseases associated with syndromes, diagnosis and management and surgery of paediatric strabismus. Dr Evangelatou is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCSEd).

Lara De Nicolo
BSc. (UK)
Is a full time Neurophysiologist at the Neuroscience Department of the American Heart Institute since June 2011. Prior to that she has been working for the Cyprus Paediatric Neurology Institute since October 2009.

She graduated with a BSc (Hons) Neuroscience with specialisation in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, at King's College London (UK) in July 2008. Her main interests in the field include: Neurophysiology: nerve cell communication, nerve conduction and the physiology of pain, the auditory and vestibular system, migraine headaches, epilepsy and stress.

She received grade A in her final year project titled: 'Can either modification or termination of the corticotropin-releasing-hormone-receptor gene expression induced by stress, interrupt the trigeminovascular nociceptive transmission seen in migraine?'
Her past laboratory experiences include: 'Research Scientist' - Neurobiology Laboratory - King's College London and 'Biomedical Laboratory Scientist' - K.L. Medical Labs, carrying out work mainly in microbiology, biochemistry and endocrinology.
She received her training in Electroencephalography in 2009 at various institutions: The Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital, The Cyprus Paediatric Neurology Institute and The Princess Mary Hospital at Akrotiri. She currently manages the Neurophysiology services at the Neuroscience Unit of the American Heart Institute and performs various Neurophysiological techniques, whereby she is responsible for supervision and the technical analysis of the Neurophysiological data in the following: Routine and Ambulatory (Neonatal, Paediatric and Adult) Electroencephalography, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Bed-side recordings, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests, Evoked Potentials (EPs), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG).

She is a member of The Association for Neurophysiological Scientists,(ANS-UK) , a professional member of The American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic technologists (ASET-USA), a member of The Epilepsy Action (UK) and a recent member of the Cyprus Clinical Neurophysiology Society since May 2011.

For her 'continuing professional development' portfolio, Lara is undertaking  'Advanced Electroencephalography/Neurophysiology' courses with ASET. She is also due to start her MSc in Neuroimaging for Research in September 2011 with the University of Edinburgh (UK).
