Paediatric Epilepsy

Paediatric Epilepsies are the most common chronic neurological disorders that frequently have an onset in early childhood, and are characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. These seizures are transient and indicate an abnormal, excessive or asynchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Epilepsy is usually controlled, but not cured, with medical therapy; whilst in refractory case other options are considered, including the ketogenic diet, epilepsy surgery or the vagal nerve stimulator. It is important to know that not all epilepsy syndromes are lifelong – and that some forms are confined to particular stages of childhood. Epilepsy should not be understood as a single disorder, but rather as a group of disorders with variable seizure types arising from abnormal electrical activity within the brain.

At CPNI both of our specialists are trained in Epileptology and therefore are considered Epilepsy Specialists, We therefore offer a specialist service with weekly Epilepsy clinics and Neurophysiology meetings where we discuss the patients’ history and EEG findings. We provide information sheets to families and medical treatment. The patients are closely monitored and reviewed at regular intervals.  The families have access to ongoing medical advice, guidance and are offered individualized counseling sessions. We also closely collaborate with schools and teachers to promote awareness, accommodate all of your child’s needs and ensure a safe and supporting environment.
