Genetics and Metabolism

A genetic disorder is caused by abnormalities (faults) in genes or chromosomes. Most disorders are quite rare and affect one person in every several thousands or millions (depending on the nature of the disorder). These faults may case children to be born with differences in body structure, brain development, or body chemistry and this may lead to problems with health, neuro-development, school performance, and/or social interaction.

Congenital metabolic diseases are usually inherited conditions that  comprise a large group of genetic diseases involving disorders of metabolism. The majority are due to defects of single genes that code for enzymes that facilitate conversion of various substances (substrates) into others (products). In most of the disorders, problems arise due to accumulation of substances which are toxic or interfere with normal function, or to the effects of reduced ability to synthesize essential compounds.

At CPNI, our Paediatric Neurologists are concerned with the identification of the causes, natural history and treatment of these disorders.  They also play a key role in assisting families in identifying and managing the special health care needs of children with genetic disorders. At CPNI our Paediatric Neurologists hold a monthly multi-disciplinary neuro-metabolic clinic because we believe that through close monitoring of each child and individualized care, we can help control symptoms and alleviate the more serious side-effects of the disease.  Our paediatric neurologists are always at your disposal to answer your questions and address your concerns.
